Ladies Sanitary Disposal Bins – An open and shut case

The strive for cleanliness and for the avoidance of touching anything previously touched by anyone else has found its way into all corners of our life including that of Ladies Sanitary Disposal Bins within ladies washrooms.

A few decades ago most sanitary disposal bins had a lid which was raised by hand, with the used sanitary dressing being paced on a concealed chute, the dressing then fell into the bin as the lids was closed. Very often a ladies sanitary disposal bin was positioned within the main body of the washroom so that ladies had to carry their used sanitary dressings out from the cubicle to dispose of them. This could of course cause some embarrassment and also lead to sanitary dressings being thrown into the WC leading to potential blockages. This has, in the main, all changed however, with a sanitary disposal bin now being placed normally within every WC cubicle.

The way the sanitary bin lid is opened has also changed to provide for a more hygienic system. Most sanitary bin lids are now opened by either a foot operated pedal or a no-touch automatic system.

Regrettably not all manufacturers of pedal operated sanitary bins have appreciated the need to make the pedal large enough and positioned correctly to be operated by the heel of the foot, particularly as cubicles are becoming so narrow that it is difficult to turn around within them. The newer, no-touch auto sanitary bin lids appear to offer a good solution, however these are often substantially more expensive, they make us of batteries which are environmentally less friendly, and some at least are less reliable with the chemical within the bin affecting the moving parts. Once the auto lid of a ladies sanitary bin ceases to function, it is back to lifting the lid by hand.

Perhaps we should concentrate even more on ensuring that everyone washes their hands after using the washroom .
