The Changing Shape of Ladies Sanitary Bins

The basic design of ladies sanitary disposal bins has seen little real significant change for many decades. In reality it is a utilitarian product comprising a bin with a secure, albeit removable lid, which has a concealed chute. The lid is raised, the used sanitary towel or tampon is placed on the chute and then the sanitary bin lid is closed causing the sanitary dressing to fall into the bin. The bin will contain a biocidal chemical such, as Neutrawaste, to control any micro-organisms, such as bacteria, moulds or bacterial viruses, and hence any smells arising out of the bin.

Having said that, a number of newer sanitary bin designs have come onto the market in the last few years driven by two main factors, a) the need to gain a competitive edge in what is a very competitive market b) space restriction in ladies toilets in new buildings.

Architects designing new washrooms are often driven by the requirement to make the most of what has become increasingly expensive space within new buildings, particularly office blocks within inner cities. Many of them forget the space requirements for such items as the sanitary disposal bin, toilet seat wipes and larger toilet roll dispensing systems. Toilet cubicles have become narrower and narrower meaning that it is almost impossible to turn around within the cubicle, let alone having space to place a sanitary disposal bin. The problem of space for the sanitary bin can be somewhat alleviated by positioning the WC slightly off centre to give a little more space for the bin.

Manufacturers and designers of the ladies sanitary bin are helping to provide at least a partial solution by producing a narrower, albeit longer, sanitary bin and most bins are now about 15cm wide whereas previously they could be as wide as 25cm. There is, however a limit to how narrow the ladies sanitary bin can be made to be acceptably usable as there must be a lid sufficiently large to allow for disposal of sanitary pads as well as the sanitary bin itself having sufficient volume to provide for a cost effective service interval routine.
