Community involvement pays off

VR Sani-Co’s Managing Director, Martin Crowther, has helped win a National Lottery award of just under £50,000 for a Bay Arts and Culture Centre in the Kings Hall in Herne Bay.

Martin is Vice Chair of the Herne Bay Improvement and Conservation Trust which was short listed for the Peoples’ Millions, going head to head with a project in Hastings on Meridian tonight in November 2010. The Bay Arts and Culture Centre won the award against stiff opposition from Hastings. The result depended purely on the number of votes received from the general public on the day and Martin and other members of the Trust manned the phones at the VR Sani-Co office until midnight to provide potential voters with the telephone number to vote on if they missed it on the TV programme.

VR Sani-Co is a leading supplier of Sanitary and Nappy Waste Disposal and other specialised washroom services in the South East of England and when he is not busy running the company, Martin is involved in the community in a number of ways. As Chair of Governors at Herne Bay Junior School, which was recently classed as a GOOD school by Ofsted, he also involved four of the pupils in the bid for the Peoples’ Millions and they were delighted to see themselves on television when the programme went out.

The Trust also worked closely with Canterbury College’s Art and Design Department on the project, and unemployed graduates will be used to undertake much of the work in upgrading the King’s Hall Facility whilst gaining additional and valuable qualifications. It is anticipated that work will begin in the spring of 2011.
